The Finance Unit ensures efficient and effective accounting operation, financial reporting and budget management for the General Council Office and its related entities. In addition to these regular financial management tasks, the Finance unit also provides advisory services to congregations around financial and compliance matters; oversees the nationally sponsored property and liability insurance coverages; and administers various capital assistance programs. The unit also has responsibility for the information technology needs of the General Council and Regional Council offices.
Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting Manager is responsible for the oversight of the accounting operations of the organization, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting principles and regulations. This includes managing the day-to-day accounting activities, preparing financial reports, and providing strategic financial guidance to support the United Church of Canada’s Vision and Call. They work closely with various units to ensure efficient financial management and contribute to the overall financial health of the organization.
Primary Areas of Responsibility
- Leadership & Staff Management: Provide leadership and direction to the accounting operation team that delivers a full spectrum of financial support. Encourages a culture of service, innovation and problem-solving in support of the United Church of Canada’s mission and provide oversight of the accounting operation functions.
- Accounting Operations: Supervise and manage all aspects of accounting operations, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Revenue Receipting and Payroll Reconciliation ensuring all functions are executed efficiently and accurately. Oversee the maintenance of the chart of accounts, ensuring its accuracy and alignment with the organization’s reporting requirements. Regularly review and assess accounting processes and systems to identify opportunities for process improvements and automation. The position requires hands-on responsibility, meaning the individual must actively engage in these tasks, providing direct oversight and involvement in the day-to-day accounting operations to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
- Financial Management: Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing procedures, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of all financial data for multiple entities.
- Audit and Regulatory Filing: Act as the primary liaison for audits (external and CRA), preparing audit schedules, coordinating the delivery of all requested documents and samples, and assisting with other external financial reporting duties and ensures all tax, HST, and other regulatory filings are completed and submitted accurately and on time.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is required;
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or equivalent is a must;
- 5 years of progressive experience in accounting/finance roles, preferably in the not-for-profit sector;
- Thorough knowledge of Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organization and Accounting Standards for Pension Plans;
- Well-developed organization, time management, planning and problem-solving skills with the ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple competing priorities;
- Proficiency with MS office products, advanced proficiency with Excel;
- Alignment with the vision and values of The United Church of Canada – respect, integrity, passion and diversity;
- Critical thinking approach with exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail; and
- Strong team player and self-motivated towards moving processes forward with the ability to coach, mentor and train staff.
Working Conditions
The United Church of Canada has adopted a hybrid workplace model, providing flexibility for this position, working both off-site and in the General Council Office, currently located at 3250 Bloor Street West in Toronto, ON. The incumbent will be provided, for work purposes, use of secure devices and must be available by email, phone, teams or zoom during regular office hours Monday to Friday. Sitting and viewing a computer screen for long periods, keyboarding/using assistive devices or technologies, intermittent physical activity including sitting, standing and being on a call for long periods of time will be required. Occasional additional hours may be required.

Compensation
The salary range for this position is $86,569 to $101,278 with the ability to progress to a maximum of $115,425. This is based on category 9 on our salary range. Placement on the salary range will be based on factors such as market condition, internal equity, candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role. Pension and group benefit plans coverage and annual vacation round out this compensation package.
