Position Title: Accounting Manager (18-24 months contract)

Location: Toronto, Yonge & Eglinton (Hybrid Work - 3 days in Office)

The opportunity:
The Accounting Manager provides leadership and expertise in the overall management of the day-to-day financial operations and reporting requirements. This role manages the integrity, accuracy and completeness of the financial records and the accounting staff and their processing of transactions, reconciliations and reporting.
How you will make an impact
- Supervise the daily functions of the accounting department, encompassing:
- Cash/electronic receipts, accounts receivable, collections, sales invoices, deferred revenue, deferred capital contributions and revenue recognition;
- Cash/electronic disbursements, accounts payable, prepaids, inventories, capital assets, broadcast rights and production costs and expenses;
- bank transactions, reconciliations, deposits and investments; and
- taxes (HST, taxable benefits, donation receipts, etc); and
- Expert of the accounting system and functionality (chart of accounts, sales invoices, payable invoices, bank reconciliation, report generation, etc.). Go-to-person for resolving issues and implementing enhancements. Financial lead for use and training of the financial system. Optimize use of the financial system for efficiencies, ensure continuous improvement of accounting workflows through implementation of technology and best practices.
- Manage month/quarter/year-end closing activities and co-ordinate, lead, perform and approve transactions. Manage others to ensure deadlines are met. Ensure accuracy of others’ work in the general ledger.
- Maintain the chart of accounts ensuring that the structure supports efficient reporting and appropriate tracking of capital renewal funds, special projects, departments, divisions, etc. revenue and expenses.
- Responsible for preparing monthly, quarterly and special projects financial reports, financial analysis and variance analysis and respond to requests from other departments for financial information/reports.
- Preparation of the annual financial statements including note disclosure.
- Responsible for external government and regulatory financial returns for the CRA (T3010), CRTC, Ministry of Education reports, IRS (US Form 990) and other compliance reports as required.
- Provide and/or organize financial training for operational department staff as requested or when a need is identified
- Provide direction, guidance and feedback to finance staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, adaptability and continuous improvement.
- Evaluate employee performance based on assessment of individual’s work and achievement of performance goals. Discuss performance with employees to provide feedback and address performance related issues as part of the employee development process.
- Develop work plans and processes for department deadlines and projects based on understanding of requirements and timelines. Assign tasks to staff based on understanding of needs and availability of resources. Ensure cross training and coverage for absences. Review and approve staff time-cards.
- Ensure that the finance department is providing satisfactory customer service and is fulfilling the Service Level Agreement standards.
- Work with external auditors directly; coordinating all aspects of the external audit(s).
- Provide back up to the Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis and the Director, Finance’s role for absences in terms of managing staff, approvals and reporting.
- Other related duties as assigned.
What you will bring to TVO:
- CPA designation
- Minimum seven (7) years of recent and related financial work experience.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience of people leadership
- Degree or advanced College Diploma in Finance, Accounting or related field.
- Experience with Dynamics 365 Business Central or Sparkrock 365 and Power BI is considered an asset.
- Experience in financial software and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Capable of dealing with sensitive information in a confidential and professional manner.
- Strong problem solving skills and attention to details to identify and resolve issues.
- Strong analytical skills and project management skills including the ability to understand needs/issues of division and partners and translate them into results.
- Strong people management and leadership skills, especially in the areas of coaching and development of team members.
- Highly developed communication skills, both orally and in writing, at all organizational levels.
- Experience working independently and ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively.
- Strong time management skills to ensure deadlines are met.
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement process improvements.
