JOB PURPOSE

The Director, Finance is a key member of the Finance team, serving as a vital link between strategic oversight and operational execution. This role supports the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in ensuring the school’s long-term financial sustainability through effective financial planning, analysis, and reporting. The Director oversees day-to-day financial operations, including budgeting, monitoring financial performance, and implementing process efficiencies to align with the school’s strategic goals. With strong analytical skills and a deep understanding of financial principles, the Director contributes to sound financial decision-making and operational excellence.

Given the dynamic and collaborative nature of our school environment, this role is an on-campus position requiring to be in the office five days a week. Candidates should be prepared to contribute actively to this in-person, community-focused environment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the CFO in preparing long-term financial strategies and forecasts aligned with the school’s mission and goals
  • Conduct detailed financial analyses to identify trends, risks, and opportunities, providing recommendations to the CFO
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and KPIs to monitor financial health and performance
  • Under the guidance of the CFO, and in collaboration with the Controller, lead the preparation of the school’s annual budget, ensuring accuracy and alignment with strategic priorities
  • Monitor and report on budget variances, providing insights and corrective action recommendations
  • Prepare and present financial updates and reports for internal and external stakeholders, including monthly reports for the CFO and updates for the Finance Committee
  • Oversee internal control processes, ensuring compliance with financial policies and regulatory requirements
  • Conduct regular reviews of financial systems and workflows to identify and implement efficiency improvements
  • Team Lead for external audits assisting the team with the preparation of documentation and liaising with auditors
  • Collaborate with the Controller to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, including bank and account reconciliations
  • Oversee integration of fundraising and finance systems, ensuring accurate tracking of donations and receipts
  • Assist the CFO in risk management assessment and insurance placements
  • Assist the CFO with the Treasury function and Endowment Fund Management
  • Manage capacity and deliverables of a high-performing team, ensuring quality work and accountability to meet timelines

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation required
  • 8+ years of experience in accounting or financial management, ideally within a nonprofit or educational environment
  • Strong knowledge of financial regulations, standards (GAAP), and risk management practices
  • Advanced analytical skills with experience in financial modeling, budgeting, and forecasting
  • Proficiency with financial systems and tools; experience with integrated financial and fundraising platforms is an asset
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate across teams
  • Strong leadership capabilities, with a demonstrated ability to manage projects and drive change
  • High level of proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly Excel
  • A proactive team player who is flexible and self-motivated with a “How can I help?” attitude
  • Proficiency in a technologically rich school environment, and skilled in Google Workspace considered a strong asset
