REPORTS TO: Finance Manager
Position Profile:
As the Senior Financial Accountant, you will process all the financial transactions of the organization, meeting all regulated, legislative, and commonly accepted accounting principles of a registered charity. Additionally, you will provide backup for the bi-weekly payroll process for 50+ employees. You will collaborate with the Finance Manager providing superior service across the organization.
Major Responsibilities:
- Record transactions and maintain the general ledger and related sub-ledgers
- Assist the Finance Manager with month-end and year-end working papers, periodic financial reporting, budgets/forecast and annual audit.
- Provide backup and administration for the payroll function
- Responsible for timely posting of month-end journals, including maintaining appropriate back up and audit trail.
- Responsible for performing month-end account reconciliations, including investigation and timely resolution of differences,
- Reviews and identifies opportunities for improvement within payroll postings, liability accounts and can be engaged to make system corrections.
- Follow up and investigate payroll requests.
- Responsible for capital asset accounting and reporting.
- Special projects as assigned including, completing special ministry and other funders reporting requirements, investigation of issues, ad-hoc reports, and cross training.
- Coordinate and/or provide back-up to support business units within the Finance Department.
- Ensure that the accounting work performed adheres to CDRCP financial policies and procedures and ensure quality assurance and compliance to standards and legislative requirements
- The Financial Accountant may be required to work remotely, and should maintain working standards in line with CDRCP’s Temporary Remote Working Policy
- The Financial Accountant may be required to engage in staggered shifts/breaks, rotating weeks in the office and work remotely, and move workstations for enhanced health and safety measures.
- Maintain all work standards with regards to environment regardless of work site and/or virtual platforms accessed in a given shift.
- The Financial Accountant is required to follow guidelines and directives regarding infectious disease control.
Full cycle Bookkeeping
- Process the full AP cycle.
- Monitor, track, and reconcile credit card transactions.
- Process employee expense claims in a timely manner.
- Record donations and other deposits including credit card receipts.
- Issue donation receipts according to Canada Revenue Agency Guidelines.
- Issue AR invoices and follow-up on aged receivables.
- Complete all balance sheet reconciliations and adjustment entries.
- Reconcile bank account(s).
Payroll
- Process bi-weekly payroll when Finance Manager is absent.
- Assist in administration of employee benefits.
- Prepare monthly and annual WSIB reporting.
- Maintain employee files/hiring documents.
- Prepare adjusting payroll journal entries for allocations to appropriate programs.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare monthly financial statements.
- Assist the Finance Manager in preparing the annual T3010 Charity Return for the CRA.
- Analyze balance sheet and income statement variances based established thresholds.
- Assist in preparing periodic funder reports.
- Assist in year-end audit working paper preparation.
- Work collaboratively with Program Managers or CEO on grant monitoring, tracking, and reporting.
Other
- Maintain accounting records.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Accountability:
- Accountable to CDRCP’s policies and procedures.
Physical Effort/Environment
- The position works in a standard office environment and is not exposed to unpleasant environmental conditions. The incumbent will be expected to travel across all the territory that CDRCP covers and to travel outside Peel to complete some job responsibilities.
Sensory Attention/Stress
- The position requires effective and advanced use of current technology, a computer and other standard office equipment. The ability to drive and move from one location to another is required. Stress may result from shifting deadlines and the need to provide leadership to ensure serious situations achieve the best possible outcomes.
Problem Solving/Decision Making:
- The Financial Accountant works under the direction of the Finance Manager and in collaboration with other members of the Management team. The Financial Accountant is required to operate within relevant legislation, provincial, municipal and agency policies, standards, procedures, and guidelines.
- Judgment is used in supporting staff from different programs and the development and maintenance of effective community relationships
Service Outcomes
- Preparing and monitoring grants and expenditure

Community Development
- The Financial Accountant is responsible for working with community partners, when relevant. This requirement may be achieved by:
- Actively participating with funders and community partners related to financial reporting, monitoring, and tracking of grants
- Staying informed of sectoral trends and best practices
- Stay informed and bring forward current trends, issues and potential service gaps to the Finance Manager and CEO
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of current relevant legislation related to charities and not for profits
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of GAAP as well as federal and provincial legislation affecting charities and not for profit organizations.
- Proficient in relevant accounting software, preferably Adagio or similar batch-based system, and have thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Suite of programs.
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
- Clear English verbal and written communication skills

Qualifications
- Post secondary education from a recognized institution in Accounting or related field
- CPA Designation Required
- Minimum of 3- 5 years related financial experience.
- Demonstrated work experience in the non-profit sector preferred.
- Acceptable Criminal Reference Check
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License, and a safe driving record and access to independent transportation
- Ability to work flexible hours and act independently
- French and/or other language is an asset
