Job Summary

The Accounting and Customs Manager position reports to the Senior Manager of Finance.  This position is responsible for the day-to-day management and directing all phases of accounting, finance, financial reporting and customs activities. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining accounting policies, procedures and reporting in accordance to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).  This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting and customs activities including month-end close, year-end reporting, treasury functions, financial reporting, collaborate and prepare for internal and external audits. 

Responsibilities

  • Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing and reporting. 
  • Analyze and report monthly/quarterly/yearly financial statements to stakeholders and regional /corporate headquarters which includes financial data; budget variances; KPI reporting and various other reporting as required.
  • Review and approval of daily transactions i.e., accounts payable disbursements, inter-company transactions, journal entries, finance and treasury management; customs issues arising.
  • Annual/Revised budget preparation, discussion and negotiations with management and executives
  • Preparation and execution of department goals and objectives and collaborate and strategically align with other departments and NA Region
  • Lead and execute projects and various activities/ systems implementation for efficiency including equitable segregation of duties, delegating and supervising team members for the timely success and completion of the project or goals.
  • Lead Accounting and Customs compliance to laws and required reporting to internal and external stakeholders including US and Canadian customs / government and customers’ requirements. 
  • Ensure that all government reporting i.e., monthly, quarterly, and yearly are filed correctly and timely including preparation of Corporate Income Tax Returns and coordinate with tax professionals and consultants before the due date.
  • Practical and in-depth knowledge on Canadian taxation and ensure that taxes are appropriately applied and complied i.e., considering Income Taxation, Goods and Services Tax / Harmonized Sales Tax, Withholding Taxes, Transfer Pricing, Specialized GST/HST cross border transactions, Non-Resident Tax, Payroll, Harmonized Tariff Schedule, related tax treaties, etc.
  • Ensure and implement appropriate internal controls and checks and balances within the organization including leading JSOX self-assessment; assist and provide requirements for internal, external auditors and government audits as required.
  • Coordinate interim and year end external audits and ensure company’s financial statements are in accordance with the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and implement countermeasures on management comment letters (MML) if any.
  • Banking and finance including review and approvals of weekly cash disbursements, treasury functions, foreign exchange transactions, approval of vendor set up and bank reconciliations.
  • Ensures that Accounts Receivables / Payable and inter-company transactions are collected and paid on time and any discrepancies including past over-due accounts are reconciled, investigated and resolved on a periodic basis.
  • Collaborate and respond to inquiries from the Director and company-wide managers regarding financial results and ad hoc reporting requests.
  • Collaborate, develop, and implement new policies, procedures and guidelines to enhance the workflow; efficiency and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy and compliance.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the team including Human and professional development, coaching, advising, mentoring and communicating while providing opportunity to grow and health and safety mindset within the company. 

Qualifications

  • Requires an Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
  • 8+ years of progressively more responsible management experience in similar role preferably in manufacturing or automotive industry.      Professional financial experience and demonstrated leadership ability. 
  • Designation in Chartered Professional Accountant.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to discuss or transmit primarily factual information to internal and external customers.
  • Strong analytical skills to investigate, interpret and reconcile information from several sources and situations.
  • Understanding of current accounting operational structure to support customer service.
  • Customer service skills to display a service-oriented attitude in addressing and responding to customer issues.
  • Advanced understanding of accounting principles and basic tax knowledge.
  • Project management skills.
  • Advanced systems knowledge (Oracle, JDE).
  • Complete understanding of the financial close process.
  • Understanding of local and provincial compliance requirements (payroll, property, sales, tax).
  • People management and development.
  • Ability to develop and maintain G&Os.

Salary Range CAD $96,000-$120,000.
