Join the Fair Chance Learning team as our Accountant!

Fair Chance Learning is a pioneering organization committed to enhancing education through innovative learning solutions. Since our inception in 2010, we have been partnering with forward-thinking leaders, as well as community and industry collaborators, to enhance learning, skills, and drive growth for individuals and organizations alike. We advocate for equitable access to high-quality education for all learners.

We are a small, well established, family run organization and are in the process of growing our internal team, bringing various functions in-house that have typically been done by external service providers.  One of the roles we are looking to bring in-house is the Accountant (please note - this is our sole in-house accountant - you will have support from our external accounting firm but we do need you to be comfortable as a sole-contributor).

As the Accountant at FCL, you will be responsible for the general accounting operations and processing of the organization’s financial transactions. This includes managing all financial transactions, processing payroll, reconciling account balances and bank statements, maintaining the general ledger, preparing month-end close procedures, analyzing and interpretating financial data, completing all financial reporting and ensuring financial transactions are accurately recorded and that the organization remains compliant with all legislated filings and returns.  You will also work with our external accounting firm to prepare all financial materials required for our year end processes.

Specific duties may include, but not be limited to:

  • Complete day-to-day accounting functions such as:
  • Invoicing, collection of accounts, cash management, and bank deposits.
  • Accounts payable processing and issuance of cheques.
  • Maintaining accurate vendor accounts and records.
  • Processing employee payroll, including expense reports.
  • Ensuring the integrity of the general ledger.
  • Participate in the management of capital assets.
  • Complete month-end processes including accruals, reconciliations, journal entries, etc.
  • Support the management team with analysis, budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting.
  • Maintain up-to-date, complete, and systematic filing systems to support financial records.
  • Prepare all documents and forms related to regulatory requirements (i.e., HST, payroll remittances, etc.) and ensures accurate and timely submission.
  • Contribute to the preparation for the annual audit and liaises with external auditors as needed.
  • Support the development and implementation of financial policies and procedures.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with staff, clients, vendors/suppliers and other outside parties.
  • Collaborate with the management team on special projects, reviews, and other initiatives.

What we are looking to have you bring to us:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field.  A CPA designation (or pursuing) is considered an asset.
  • 2-4 years of relevant general accounting experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of computer systems and software including financial and payroll systems, spreadsheets, databases, web-based programs, and e-mail.
  • Working experience with Quickbooks is required.
  • A keen interest in the learning development sector and a desire to contribute to its advancement.
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proven attention to detail and accuracy with excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated adherence to confidentiality for sensitive financial data and employee information.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team to prioritize time sensitive tasks with minimal direction.
  • Confidence and ability to make informed recommendations.

What we can offer to you:

  • The chance to contribute meaningfully to the field of learning and development.
  • Competitive wages ($65,000 - $80,000 per annum) with an excellent benefits package, including matching contributions toward your RRSP.
  • A collaborative, kind, family-focused culture where large egos do not fit.
  • An environment that encourages personal and professional growth which includes opportunities for professional development and continuous learning.
  • Generous vacation and sick day entitlements.
  • Financial support to purchase items required to set up a suitable work-from-home environment.
  • Some additional perks currently include summer hours and office shut-down over the December holidays.

Work Arrangement:

The current work arrangement is hybrid in nature with the expectation that a minimum of 3-days will be in office.  This arrangement is also subject to change with the needs of the operation and at the sole discretion of the employer and may require the employee to return to full in-office work in the future.
