About Us
The unit's mission is to provide effective financial leadership, services, information and stewardship in support of the academic, research and service activities of Western’s community.
The Endowment and Restricted Funds division provides exemplary financial management of donations, government funding and other sources of external and internal funds entrusted to The University for the support of the faculties, departments and students.
Responsibilities
The Analyst performs accounting functions for Endowment and Restricted Funds within Financial Services, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. The Accounting Analyst will be responsible for delivering day-to-day financial support to faculties and departments including administrative and financial processes, account analysis, reconciliations, and compliance of spending on projects held in trust at the University. The Accounting Analyst will compile relevant data and provide accurate and timely reports as required. The Accounting Analyst will maintain compliance with University policies and procedures and Canada Revenue Agency guidelines to assist with the mitigation of financial and operational risk to the University.
Qualifications
Education:
- Undergraduate Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field
- Completion of or working towards your Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) is preferred
Experience:
- 5 years’ experience in corporate accounting/finance Finance/Business Administration
- Strong experience within a computerized financial system environment (e.g. PeopleSoft Financials)
- Experience with creating, reading, analyzing and preparing financial reports
- Experience in a public sector or educational institution would be an asset
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Familiarity with accounting standards for not-for-profits, tax legislation and with complex reporting and accounting issues
- Communication skills with an ability to complete detailed analytics and reports and to clearly and effectively interact with all levels of the organization
- Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards
- Analytical skills to accurately interpret and integrate report data from various sources
- Customer service skills to understand customer needs and expectations, with a desire to deliver helpful and reliable service to the University community
- Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of data, while ensuring that information is accurate and comprehensive
- Ability to organize and effectively manage financial resources needed to achieve results
- Ability to collect and discern relevant data to create reports and recommendations
- Adapts readily and effectively to changing priorities and demands
- Ability to take responsibility for own work and ensure that deadlines are met and outcomes are achieved
- Computer skills with the ability to creatively use and integrate technology to improve quality and productivity
- Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Excel, Access)
- Ability to identify opportunities for improvement, while being open to trying new ideas and working methods
- Ability to exhibit a professional, respectful and honest approach to work
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
- Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
