Accountant

Overview

St. Augustine’s Seminary is looking for an Accountant to meet the full-cycle accounting needs and provide detailed financial reporting to the staff and stakeholders of the Seminary. Reporting to the Bursar (CFO), the Accountant is responsible for the general ledger in Sage 300, reconciliations, and the various regulatory filings throughout the year.

 

To succeed in this role, you will be an effective communicator who can explain financial matters to an audience who does not have a finance background. You also enjoy working in a small, multi-faceted position and are a self-starter with an eye towards modernizing financial reporting & improving operations overall.

 

Responsibilities

- Prepare and record journal entries in Sage 300, particularly year-end adjustments and accruals to produce complete financial statements

- Process payments and deposit funds as needed

- Process tax receipts for donations

- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and reporting packages

- Review payroll including entries in Dayforce Powerpay, source deductions, contributions for WSIB, extended health/dental benefits, and pension

- Complete year-end procedures, reconciliations/reporting of year-end slips, T4, T4A, T4A-NR, NR4, and EHT annual return

- Calculate and prepare schedules for salary increases

- Prepare CRA HST filings quarterly and as-needed non-resident withholding taxes

- Prepare annual financial reports for the Association of Theological Schools (ATS)

- Compile information for annual Registered Charity Information Return (T3010)

- Populate annual financial reports for the Council of Ontario Universities (COU)

- Assist with creation of annual Operations and Capital Expenditure budgets

- Compare actual spending by department to budgeted values quarterly

- Amend templates in Sage 300 Financial Reporter to meet reporting needs

- Collect and process payroll information for employee onboarding & offboarding

- Other duties as required

 

Requirements

- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Commerce, or a related field, or an acceptable combination of education and experience

- Completed or actively pursuing an accounting designation (CPA) is preferred

- 5+ years in an accounting role with expanding responsibilities

- Strong proficiency with MS Excel for developing reports and forecasting

- Working knowledge of Canadian GAAP and Non-Profit accounting standards (ASNPO)

- Sage experience preferred, or with another accounting ERP system

- Experience in an education institution and/or registered charity considered an asset

- Experience with Ceridian/Dayforce Powerpay or similar payroll software

- Access to a vehicle for bank deposits and travel between Seminary campuses

- Strong time management and organizational skills with attention to details

- Ability to work independently and in a team setting

- High level of initiative, maturity, tact, and diplomacy

- Understanding of the Catholic Church – its tenets & culture – and respect for its leadership & clergy

- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

- A criminal background check will be required of the successful applicant
