In this role, you will work under the direction of the COO and collaborate closely with the Senior Management Team (SMT). You will oversee all activities related to financial reporting and analysis, budgeting, investment management, business processes/systems, organizational risk assessment, human resources oversight, and other aspects of organizational administration. Additionally, you will provide leadership to the Finance and Administration team, ensuring excellence in all financial and administrative functions.

Mandate of the Director of Finance and Administration:
- Manage financial operations, ensuring regulatory compliance and excellence in financial control and accounting.
- Lead budgeting, financial reporting, and investment management processes.
- Supervise, onboard, and train the finance team.
- Deliver financial and risk profile reports to the CEO, COO, and Board; present annual audit reports.
- Liaise with external auditors and ensure compliance with all audits and regulations.
- Collaborate with the COO on financial control, accounting, and regulatory compliance matters.
- Monitor and report on financial performance, including investment returns and key metrics, to inform decision-making.
- Support organizational fundraising, proposal development, and stay abreast of sector best practices to update financial policies and procedures.
Human Resources, IT and Administration
- Oversee all HR functions, including compensation, benefits, payroll, employee files, contracts, training, and recruiting.
- Ensure recruiting processes align with diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments.
- Collaborate with the COO on purchasing, inventory control, insurance renewal, and IT department oversight.
- Work with external partners, including third-party vendors and consultants, and participate in the joint health and safety committee.
Leadership
- Supervise and provide coaching, guidance, and support to the Finance and Administration team.
- Collaborate with the CEO and COO to develop goals, policies, and operational procedures that align with the Roots of Empathy mission and strategy.
Experience/Qualifications
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a relevant field, along with a professional accounting designation (CPA) in good standing.
- Have extensive experience with financial reporting guidelines for charities, GAAP, and CRA regulations and guidelines.
- Bring at least five years of experience in a charitable not-for-profit environment, managing financial services such as budget preparation, funder reporting, financial analysis, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, audits, and financial policies.
- Have a solid understanding of the legal, fiscal, and regulatory environment for charitable organizations, with experience preparing financial reports for government, philanthropic, and institutional donors.
- Be proficient with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Enterprise, QuickBooks Online, ADP) and possess expert Microsoft Excel skills for data analysis and summarization.
- Excel at communicating complex financial statements and budgets in accessible language, with experience in software transition and integration, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
Benefits available for this position
- Salary Range $110,000 to $120,000
