The FPCBP Board of Directors is inviting community members to apply to serve on the Board as Treasurer.
The primary responsibility of the Treasurer is to provide a fiduciary duty of care over the finances of the not-for-profit organization and keep the keep informed on the financial activity, profitability and provide guidance on how policies and procedures from a financial perspective. The Treasurer will work with the executive committee, all other event committees and all board members to achieve the organizational mandate.
Specifically, the Treasurer is tasked with presenting financial statements at the monthly board meetings.

Description
TITLE: Volunteer Board Member
STATUS: 2 Year Term (12 meetings/year)
LOCATION: Remote/work from home with occasional on-site events

We are:
Federation of Portuguese-Canadian Business & Professionals is a Not For Profit corporation, incorporated on December 7, 1981. It began by working in the Greater Toronto community, fostering both business and community development, and has since expanded its reach to foster both business and community development across Canada and Portugal.
The FPCBP is governed by a board of 12 directors and 2 trustees. Directors and Trustees are accountable to all members in maintaining and promoting, through various subcommittees FPCBP’s image and to provide organized events throughout the year, including, among other things, monthly business forums, an Annual Golf Tournament and the Annual Awards Gala, where recognition is given to outstanding business and academic achievement.
The FPCBP is proud to foster the oldest and largest scholarship program in the Portuguese community. With the tremendous support of our sponsors and community, the FPCBP Scholarship program has expanded and increased the number of monetary awards in order to meet the ever-increasing number of qualified applicants of Portuguese descent.
The FPCBP has a history of partnering with other community groups toward the successful achievement of our objectives. By virtue of these business and professional networks, our organization is very well integrated into the fabric of our Portuguese community and indeed the broader Canadian community. Many of our members are active volunteers within other external organizations.
Our Mission is to promote business activity, foster professionalism, develop networking opportunities, enhance political visibility, encourage academic excellence and collectively advocate for the prominence of our members within and outside the Portuguese Canadian Business and Professional community
- Help to foster and safeguard the trade, business, professional, cultural and general welfare of its’ members
- Promote the adoption and application of higher social, business, cultural and professional standards and ethics
- Cooperate with other organizations of similar objectives, encouraging a spirit of tolerance and comprehension
- Provide leadership for Portuguese-Canadians to participate at the highest level in Civic and Political Canadian life
- Provide leadership and promote business interaction with other Ethnic-Canadian Business and Professionals
- Host forums on topical and current affairs
- Host Networking events which foster Business and Professional Development
- Maintain and enhance the FPCBP Scholarship Program
- Encourage excellence amongst Portuguese-Canadians and distinguish those who merit recognition (FPCBP Business and Professional Excellence Awards)
- Support, encourage and disseminate Portuguese Cultural Heritage
Responsibilities:
– FPCBP has a ‘working-style board’, which means Directors must be willing to work on community events as part of event committees, attend 12 formal board meetings per year, and other meetings as required
- Work independently to prepare the monthly financial statements
- Interact with stakeholders: bankers, IT consultant, vendors, customers, etc
- Provide strategic leadership to the organization, ensuring that the mission, vision, and goals are met
- Be the lead financial resource for the organization, helping to communicate, lead and report on the activities/events of the board
– Be committed to actively participating and sharing ideas with the Board
Time Commitment:
– Weekly average of 5 hours (email follow up, invoicing, paying suppliers, bank reconciliation)
Note (increased time commitment for larger planned events, eg. The annual Gala in March)
Skills/Requirements:
– Prior experience serving on a non-profit Board is an asset, but we are happy to provide board training as required
(Note: the incumbent Treasurer will provide transitional support as required)
– We are seeking candidates with:
- CPA certification
- That are of Portuguese descent
- Have experience working with Quickbooks, Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- M– Maintains a positive attitude – is outgoing and cheerful with stakeholder interactions
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
- Self-motivated with ability to work well independently and remotely
