Finance Director

 LOCATION: Anishinabek Nation Head Office, Nipissing First Nation 

Full Time Position with Benefits

 (after successfully completing 3 months of employment)

Salary Range: $112,411 to $127,399

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Finance Director is responsible for the overall strategic planning and oversight of the financial operations of the Anishinabek Nation (Union of Ontario Indians). The Finance Director will also be responsible for the oversight of Finance Staff (currently the Senior Finance Officer, Finance Support Officer x2, and Finance Clerk).  

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation and/or an equivalent combination of academic education and senior experience in the financial accounting field preferably within a not-for-profit or First Nation organization;
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in the financial accounting field; 
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a management role with direct reports; 
  • Knowledge of manual and automated financial and accounting systems and controls;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with SAGE 300, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and relevant computer systems, programs and software), Zoom, and able to learn new technologies and tools; 
  • Must be able to provide a Criminal Record Check for this position; and
  • Possess a valid Ontario driver’s license and be insurable.

RESPONSIBILITIES (not comprehensive):

  • Overseeing all aspects of the financial cycle including receipt of invoices, requisitions, and travel claims, obtaining approvals, data processing, filing and processing cheques or Electronic Funds Transfer;

 

 

  • Overseeing all aspects of accounts receivable functions including timely preparation of invoices, cash receipts, deposit slips, post bank transactions to general ledger and sub-ledgers;
  • Maintaining computerized accounting records including receipts, disbursements and general ledger. Responsible for processing of month end general ledger transactions including payroll and bank transactions; perform monthly bank reconciliations;
  • Monitoring and evaluating the finances of the organization including, but not limited to, budget management, financial administration, tax matters, audit management, treasury, and debt management;
  • Preparing and presenting monthly, quarterly and annual financial and statistical statements and reports for the CEO, department directors, Board of Directors, and Treasury Board;
  • Providing supervision to Finance staff to carry out the Finance processes, work plans, and initiatives of the organization;
  • Preparing and publishing timely monthly financial statements, following up on discrepancies and implementing solutions to ensure accurate reporting. Supporting month-end and year-end close process;
  • Coordinating and directing the preparation budgets and financial forecasts and report variances;
  • Managing all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, General Ledger, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting and Revenue Recognition;
  • Analyzing accounting and financial records and systems to ensure compliance with established accounting standards, regulations, procedures, and internal controls;
  • Developing, recommending, and implementing financial policies, procedures, and controls to ensure compliance to regulatory requirements and industry best practices;
  • Developing and documenting business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls;
  • Providing reporting, analysis, and recommendations on various issues, communicating resolution of compliance issues and other complex reporting figures;
  • Coordinating the preparation of external financial statements and external audit; 
  • Coordinating timing on all external audit work, discussing in depth process issues and audit findings, implementing analysis for audit conclusion, and implementing corrective actions;
  • Other duties as assigned.
