The Avon Maitland District School Board is inviting applications for the full-time permanent, non-union position of Manager of Finance at the Education Centre in Seaforth.

The Avon Maitland District School Board is a full service, public, English school district in southwestern Ontario, bordering Lake Huron and covering the counties of Huron and Perth. Nestled in the heart of Southwest Ontario, Huron and Perth Counties are a study in contrasts. Lush, rural farmland and backcountry roads intersect with historic architecture, arts, culture, and the newest culinary trends. 

In the geographical center of this thriving region is Avon Maitland’s Education Centre in Seaforth. The Board’s Administrative Offices are located here, and they contain the central support for 31 elementary and 8 secondary schools, approximately 1600 teachers and 900 support staff.  Additional information regarding the Board is available on the Board’s website at

Reporting to the Senior Finance Manager, the successful candidate will provide finance support to schools and departments across the district and assist in the compilation of the Board’s annual budget and financial statements. As a member of the Financial Services leadership team, the successful candidate will also assist in the development of business plans, workflow modernization and training initiatives to support our system.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Support schools, departments, Adult Education program leaders, and Centre for Employment and Learning (CEL) site(s) staff in all aspects of financial management and reporting, including:
  • Provision of leadership, technical guidance and interpretation for schools, departments and CEL sites regarding accounting matters;
  • Support of school, department, and CEL budget preparation, monitoring of expenditures, and the preparation of variance analysis and expenditure forecasting;
  • Support school, department, and CEL staff in the application of finance related Administrative Procedures and guidelines, including training; and
  • Supervise the scheduling, completion, and follow up associated with annual reviews of controls within schools, departments, and CEL sites.
  • Responsible for the supervision, direction and development of School Support Team staff.
  • Assist in the completion of the Board’s financial reporting requirements including the preparation of annual financial statements and other internal and external reports, in compliance with PSAB and applicable Ministry Guidelines.
  • Assist the Sr Finance Manager in the compilation of the Board’s budget and revised budget including costing, scenario building, and Ministry report entry.
  • Draft and implement regular updates to Board Administrative procedures related to and impact by the duties listed above.
  • Liaise with external governing bodies, internal and external auditors where applicable.
  • Assist with the preparation and presentation of financial information at the Board’s Audit and Finance Committees, as relative to the direct duties listed above.
  • Participate in the needs analysis in terms of new Ministry and Board initiatives, assistance in the selection and/or design of internal tracking systems, and the coordination of activities related to system implementation as required.
  • Work collaboratively as a member of the Financial Services team to meet departmental and organizational objectives.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Professional Accounting Designation (i.e. CPA) University Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or equivalent Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in Finance or Accounting NOTE: while we prefer candidates with a minimum of 5 years of experience, we encourage individuals with less experience who believe they possess the skills and drive to excel in this role to apply. We evaluate all applications on a case-by-case basis.

School board or other public sector experience would be an asset Proven professional written and oral communication skills Initiative and motivation to ensure quality and accuracy of tasks performed Strong analytical skills and attention to detail Excellent knowledge and understanding of PSAB The capacity to work independently, problem-solve and multi-task in a busy environment Efficient and accurate keyboarding skills Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality Demonstrated proficiency in advanced level computer applications

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week (12 months per year)

Rate of Pay: $78,969 - $91,961 in accordance with the Terms and conditions of Employment for Non-Union, Management, Administrative and Supervisory Employees

Pension Plan: Defined pension plan through the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS)

Start Date: As soon as possible.

This job is part of the Work from Home Program, which is a trial program implemented for the 2023-2024 school year.  The WFH program is 1-2 days working from home as determined with the supervisor and with restrictions and parameters.  This program may be extended beyond the 2023-2024 school year, at the sole discretion of our senior leadership team
