Accountant – Operations, Finance Unit
The Finance Unit of The United Church of Canada is seeking an individual to fill the role Accountant - Operations on a permanent full-time basis (35 hours/week).
Finance is called upon to ensure efficient and effective financial accounting, reporting, and management functions for the General Council Office and the Pension Plan of The United Church of Canada, including the broad general areas of revenue, expenditure, budget and reporting; external audit, risk management; and information technology. It also manages the annual denominational assessment program which funds the governance work of the General and regional councils. In addition to these regular financial management tasks, the Finance area also provides advisory services to congregations around financial and compliance matters; oversees the nationally sponsored property and liability insurance coverages; and administers various capital assistance programs. It also provides back office services to united church relate entities, including the pension plan, the UCC Foundation, KAIROS, United Property Resource Corporation and several regional councils.
Reporting to the Accounting Manager, this position is a key resource to the Finance Unit. The Accountant, Operations will act as support to finance functions such as accounting, auditing, reporting and analysis.
The main areas of focus will be:
- General Ledger and Operations: Perform month-end close; ensure processing of monthly journals, bank reconciliation, investment accounting, monitoring general ledger activities and assisting with interim and year-end audits.
- Reporting and Analysis: Assist with preparation of internal and external financial statement and reports.
- Government Remittance and Statutory Filing: Prepare annual CRA T slips; Prepare Federal and Provincial sales tax returns, GST/HST rebates

Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Accounting/Business;
- Professional accounting designation, CPA (in progress) or equivalent experience;
- 3+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience in full cycle accounting or related areas, preferably in the not-for-profit sector;
- Advanced knowledge of Excel, especially with v-lookups, pivot tables, and other data functions;
- Professional written and verbal communication skills;
- Solid planning, organizational, attention to detail, problem solving and time management skills.
- Able to work collaboratively, both as team player and task leader, to produce high quality work, while managing time appropriately and completing tasks from start to finish;
- Positive customer relations attitude and a willingness to apply skills and business acumen to matters raised by internal and external stakeholders; and
- Alignment with the vision and values of The United Church of Canada.
Working Conditions:
The United Church of Canada has adopted a hybrid workplace model, providing flexibility for this position, working both off-site and in the General Council Office, currently located at 3250 Bloor Street West in Toronto, ON. The incumbent will be provided, for work purposes, use of secure devices and must be available by email, phone, teams or zoom during regular office hours Monday to Friday. A dedicated workspace is required as this position will be dealing with sensitive matters. Occasional overtime may be required

Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $66,193.01 to $75,440.91 with the ability to progress to a maximum of $88,257.32. This is based on category 7 on our salary range. Placement on the salary range will be based on factors such as market condition, internal equity, candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role. Pension and group benefit plans coverage and annual vacation round out this compensation package.
