Assistant Controller, Finance Unit, The United Church of Canada

The Finance Unit of The United Church of Canada is seeking an individual to fill the role of Assistant Controller on a permanent full-time basis (35 hours/week). The General Council Office supports the mission and ministry of the communities of faith and regional councils.  It is the denominational expression of The United Church of Canada, working ecumenically and in global partnership.

The Finance Unit ensures efficient and effective financial accounting, reporting, and management functions for the General Council Office and the Pension Plan of The United Church of Canada, including the broad areas of revenue, expenditures, assets, liabilities, financial reserves, budgeting, financial reporting, investments and risk management. The unit also has responsibility for the information technology needs of the General Council and Regional Council offices.

Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant performs complex duties in financial budgeting, analyses and reporting at the expert level to enable effective and efficient financial management of the Church. They establish and maintain proper controls, processes, and procedures ensuring records are both kept accurate and in compliance with accounting principles or standards. They evaluate multi-faceted financial information, prepare reports indicating trends, provide recommendations to management and respond to inquiries for professional counsel related to financial information.

This position has three direct reports, the Accounting Manager, the Manager Budgets and Reporting, General Accountant and the Financial Analyst. They work other members in the Finance Unit and with the other Unites within the General Council Offices.

The main areas of focus are:

  • Leadership & Staff Management:   Provide leadership and direction to the accounting team that delivers a full spectrum of financial support. Encourages a culture of service, innovation and problem-solving in support of UCC’s mission and provide oversight of all aspects of financial management.
  • Financial Reporting: Provide oversight of all aspects of financial management, including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, budget and forecasts preparation.
  • Budget Management and Financial Analysis:  Lead the annual budgeting process and periodic forecasting cycles and develop and maintain the organization's financial planning models, including budgets, forecasts, and long-term financial plans.
  • Government Reporting and Regulatory Compliance: Monitor corporate and charitable filing requirements to ensure compliance with various government and legal acts, including the annual T3010 filings as required by Canada Revenue Agency
  • Financial Policies & Procedures: Develop, document and enforce a documented system of accounting policies and procedures to maintain and strengthen internal controls.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related fields;
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is a must;
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting/finance roles and 3+ years of experience in management or leadership roles;
  • Public accounting firm experience would be considered an asset;
  • Excellent knowledge with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close processes;
  • Thorough knowledge of Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organization and Accounting Standards for Pension Plans;
  • Experience with investment accounting and complex revenue recognition for Not-for-Profit organizations;
  • Experience supervising staff together with strong leadership skills;
  • Knowledge of methods of financial analyses, modeling tools, internal controls, organizational structure, policies and procedures;
  • Skilled at performing numerical analyses; interpreting policy statements and statues; drafting precise and concise reports; communicating results of financial analyses, both written and verbal; monitoring and overseeing operations and work flow; providing guidance and training to staff.
  • Well-developed organization, time management, planning and problem-solving skills with the ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple competing priorities;
  • Strong computer skills in the use of various software applications - Office 365, SharePoint, Dynamics, One Drive, Teams, Zoom, and other online platforms;
  • High quality Excel spreadsheet skills for handling large volumes of data (function knowledge specific to V-Lookups and index/match, indirect, trims, left, right, mid, substitute, if statements [with or/and logic]);
  • Excellent customer service attitude and skills;

  • Critical thinking approach with exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail; Strong team player and self-motivated towards moving processes forward with the ability to coach, mentor and train staff.

Working Conditions:

The United Church of Canada has adopted a hybrid workplace model, providing flexibility for this position, working both off-site and in the General Council Office, currently located at 3250 Bloor Street West in Toronto, ON. The incumbent will be provided, for work purposes, use of secure devices and must be available by email, phone, teams or zoom during regular office hours Monday to Friday. Sitting and viewing a computer screen for long periods, keyboarding/using assistive devices or software, intermittent physical activity including sitting, standing and being on the phone for long periods of time will be required. Occasional additional hours may be required.

Compensation

Salary will be based on skills and experience, within the category 10 position salary range of $89,300 to $119,000. Pension and group benefit plans coverage and annual vacation round out this compensation package.
